Beverly Salmond was born singing. When she had her 3 children she added fingerplays, storytelling, dolls, and gnomes to singing. Her children grew and Beverly went to school and became a Speech and Language Pathologist. She still uses singing and fingerplays in her work but she also uses needle felted woolfolk and critters.
At a class taught by Suzanne Down on Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays and Best Speech Development, Beverly was introduced to dry needle felting and the joy and delight continues. She is attending a 3-year program through the Juniper Tree School of Story and Puppetry Arts based out of Vancouver Island in Canada, to perfect her puppetry and story telling skills.
The woolfolk puppets and critters are warm and full of heart. They are made of wool using natural and dyed wool rovings. A felting needle, with small sharp barbs, is used to sculpt the wool into form. It is magical watching the wool transform into each unique woolfolk or critter. Beverly has expanded the fiber art into crafting needle felted pictures, again, using wool and the felting needle. The images are soft because of the rich warm colored wool and yet have been crafted with clear details. Each of her art pieces is beautiful and created with joy.
Beverly teaches a monthly needle felting class. Her needle felted pictures are created with joy from a snapshot, a discussion or a word. Nativities, nursery rhyme characters can be special ordered. She also creates critters for people whose beloved pets have perished. You can reach her at 916-965-1177 or beverlyswoolfolk@sbcglobal.net.
